Well that was a complete and total disaster wasn't it?
So much for the theory that sat behind my model. A resounding 1/4 results leaves me £9.20 down on my adaptation of Kellys, and £4.50 down on a LSP £2 portfolio. It wasn't a good weekend. So..what went wrong with the bets?
MNU vs TOT - Over 2.5 goals - result 1-0
My model seemed to suggest there was some value in the over 2.5 bet. What went wrong? For those who watched the game, you will have noted hardly any chances made. is this perhaps two sides cancelling each other out? Last seasons fixtures were a 3-0 at Old Trafford and a 0-0 at WHL. The season before this the teams battled it out in a 2-2 draw at WHL and a 1-2 victory for Spurs at Old Trafford. What happened here was both teams lacked the incision to play that killer ball - united often spreading play wide to young, who would run at walker and either put in a poor cross or play it back to Carrick/ Schniderlin. While Kane and Eriksen showed great promise Kane's passing was sloppy and Eriksen wasted a great opportunity.
So...was this game lost due to a faulty model? Or was this just noise? After all, the model predicted a 63% chance of over 2.5, not 100%. I note that the model also said there was 5% value in backing United to win, but instead i went for the juicier overs bet (albeit this bet has more over round - Ill do more analysis on this later).
CHE vs SWA - Under 2.5 goals - result 2-2
Oh dear. Chelsea conceded just 9 goals at home last season - 0.47 per game. Swansea scored 1 per game. The average was 1.1 per game - on paper this looked a good bet, especially at Evens. yet what we saw was a Swansea team that clicked together. In the 2014 season both games ended 1-0 to Chelsea, although last season we saw 4-2 and 5-0 victories. So was this necessarily a good prediction? If the model believes there was value in under 2.5, should it not have seen what happened last season? Chelsea scoring just two goals could be as a result of not having a fully fit striker - perhaps Monk vs Mourinho styles mean a very open game?
I am toying with the idea of having a new bolt on (this will be the fourth) which places a greater emphasis on last seasons results. obviously this allows for some error in player replacement but currently i find myself looking through previous results for further clarity. This shouldn't happen. Over the coming weeks I will test as to whether past results indicate future results (after adjusting for quality of teams and manager changes of course).
In any case, this bet fell flat on its face. I entered Sunday praying for a Mame Biram Diouf Hattrick
STO vs LIV - Home win - result 0-1
Before the game I realised I had made a mistake. I had gambled slightly. The model was indifferent between a Stoke win and a Stoke win/draw (double chance). I had gone for a Stoke win because of the enhanced odds. Genuine question to my readers (who am I kidding....), what is better in your opinion, a bet at evens with a 75% chance of winning, or a bet of 3/1 with a 50% chance of winning? Only one chance to roll the dice so I don't want expected value analysis, just your opinion.
Onto the game. The model was fairly sure Stoke was the value bet here. I commented above that my new bolt on would emphasise previous results from last season. In this scenario my model would have SCREAMED to bet the house on stoke after the 6-1 demolition. But it just wasn't to be. Was it the loss of N'zonzi? Shawcross? Bojan? Arnautovic? Begovic (though i doubt that is what caused the lack of attacking swerve.) Stoke were allegedly very unlucky not to take something from the game so i am willing to write this off as noise, but things were really not looking good....
WBA vs MCI - Over 2.5 - result 0-3
Just! In truth City dominated this game. Probably the only team to look sharp out of the big boys. There was 13.5% value in backing this and coincidentally in my preview I mentioned that this was the one I felt least confident about!
So what did I not bet on? As you guys know, I dont want to do the promoted teams just yet. Translating data from Championship to Premier league is messy (probably due to the high number of transfers promoted clubs do and how varied the successes and failures are. My model also said there was great value in City away win (9.1%) though I don't like betting on the same game twice.
It also said:
Newcastle Vs Southampton - Bookies priced it correctly. My first bolt on suggested a tiny bit of value in Southampton win (3%) but my second bolt on said this was the worst bet you could do on this game. No possible prediction.
Arsenal Vs West Ham - No value in any bets at all - you bet on this game and you're just paying the over round. However there is a bit of value in Under 2.5 Goals (7%). Why did I ignore this? because honestly I didn't believe it was correct. This is something I will have to watch in future. There should be no emotion in this model, and that's a possible lost value bet there at generous odds. (2.33x)
Chelsea Vs Swansea - Home win is a very poor bet (-6.9%). Draw has the best value but still nothing to get excited about (3.5%). Under 2.5 goals is definitely the best bet (15.6%...)
Leicester Vs Sunderland - Bookmakers have priced this absolutely perfectly. H/D/A all loses value. Some value in Under 2.5 goals (3.3% - 6%) but again not too much to be excited about.
Man Utd Vs Tottenham - A bit of value in the Home win (4%) but Over 2.5 presents about 7.7% value - that's the bet to place.
I wonder..should i run separate books on over/under and FT result? They have very different overrounds and the model may be better at one over the other. Its something to consider going forward. I will archive this model, update the data with this weekends results and publish something later this week for gameweek 2 - hopefully better predictions!
I also plan to do a couple articles every now and then just with some thoughts, betting ideas and analysis for you guys to read. They may not necessarily be good betting ideas but I hope they will be entertaining nevertheless.
Happy Hunting Guys.
